LG did a good job with LG G Pro 2. Lately LG launches great devices like LG G2 or LG G Pad which is the best Android tablet right now. We love them both. Can LG G Pro 2 get into our heart too? Maybe, if it was launched today but we have to wait until April and then other devices will go around. There are a lot of rumors about new Samsung and HTC devices and until April, maybe a new iPhone will be on the market. So that’s the main problem with LG G Pro 2, it’s a great phone for now, but who know what happens in two months.
COMPARED TO LG G PRO
LG G Pro was a great device but not as good as LG G Pro 2. The new Pro has a bigger screen (5.9 inches to 5.5) but with less pixels per inch (401 to 373). That’s because of the bigger size of the screen. LG G Pro 2 has also a faster processor (from quad core 1.7GHz to quad core 2.3GHz) with more RAM (from 2GB to 3GB). Although both weight 172 grams, LG G Pro 2 is slimmer (8.3mm to 9.4mm). It also has a newer version of Android as G Pro 2 will be launched with Android 4.4 (G Pro has Android 4.1). Both devices were launched in April (G Pro was launched in April 2013). Let’s compare LG G Pro 2 to other Android devices.
COMPARED TO ALL ANDROID DEVICES
SCREEN
The screen on LG G Pro 2 is huge, we are talking about a 5.9” Full HD IPS with 373 pixels per inch. You can’t find a bigger screen with more pixels per inch. Only HTC One Max has the same pixels for the same size. All other devices with bigger screens have less pixels so you have one of the best screens for that size. Of course there are better screens but are smaller like the HTC One with 469PPI. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has more pixels (386PPI) but a smaller screen. Of course all these screens beyond 350PPI are really great.
CAMERA
LG G Pro 2 has a 13MP camera as Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and many other premium smartphones. It also has a front camera of 2.1MP for video chat. Right now there are 20.7MP smartphones from Sony like Sony Xperia Z1S. So there are better camera devices. There are more than 15 smartphones with 13MP cameras so LG G 2 Pro is not alone. In the 5.9 inches LG G Pro is the only phone with 13MP camera and if you look at bigger devices, there is also Sony Xperia T2 Ultra and LG G Flex with the same camera. All other devices with huge screens have 8MP cameras like Sony Xperia Z Ultra, Samsung Mega and Huawei Ascend Mate). We would like to see a bigger camera, a camera that would make us buy this phone only for the camera. But LG made a safe choice and stuck to the 13MP camera.
PROCESSOR
We like fast processors and there are plenty of smartphones with really powerful quad core power. LG G Pro 2 is one of them. It has a quad core processor at 2.24GHz with 3GB of RAM. It’s the only device along with Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy Round that has 3GB of RAM. So it’s the first LG device with more RAM than we are used to. And we like it. LG G Pro 2 is one of the fastest devices in the big screen area. LG G Flex is another fast device and of course Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo.
BATTERY
We love big batteries and LG G Pro 2 has one of them. The device has a 3200mAh battery and some apps to make the battery last longer. Of course there are even bigger batteries in even bigger devices like the huge 4050mAh battery on the huge 6.1 inches screen Huawei Ascend Mate. HTC One Max has a slightly bigger battery (3300 to 3200mAh) but we are happy with the battery of LG G Pro 2.
SOFTWARE
There was no other option for LG than Android 4.4 Kit Kat. The phone will be on the EU and US market on April so there is no room for an older Android OS. LG G Pro 2 has Android 4.4 and is one of the few devices with that version. There is no other phone with big screen more than 5.5 inches with Android 4.4 right from the start. Of course some devices will be updated to the new version but we like devices with the new version right from the start. So today only two devices have Android 4.4 from the start, LG G Pro 2 and Google Nexus 5.
SIZE & DESIGN
LG phones are becoming more and more beautiful and LG G Pro 2 is among the beauty. It weights 172 grams, it is not light but you have a really big screen here. Sony Xperia T2 Ultra is 1 gram lighter with 0.1 inches more on the screen. You will not notice the difference. LG G Pro 2 is not the slimmer phone, it is 8.3mm but there are slimmer phones like the extra slim Sony Xperia Z Ultra (6.5mm) and also Sony Xperia T2 Ultra (7.7mm). But we like the design of LG G Pro 2 and all the other LG devices made of glass and fine metal.
VERDICT – should I buy this device?
LG G Pro 2 is a great device. Right now it’s the second best device of the market with Samsung Galaxy Note 3 keeping the first place. But the difference is so small and fragile that we could say that after 2-3 months and if nothing new comes on the market, LG G Pro 2 will be the first device to win and take the throne from Samsung Galaxy Note 3. LG G Pro 2 is a fast device, with great huge screen and camera, the latest Android version and a lot of reasons to buy it. But you have to wait until April if you are on the US or EU market and that’s the main disadvantage. Until April, we may have more choices.
